Passionate About:

Throughout my time at the University of Dayton, I have developed an ever-growing passion and love for learning about others and providing services that can improve their quality of life. After participating in a medical and public heath brigade last January, I not only felt truly humbled and honored to be able to meet the Nicaraguan families that I served and learn about their culture, but I also felt an intense calling to continue to serve and educate about global health issues in the community that we all share, our world. However, I also recognized the great need for us as volunteers in any capacity, to deeply learn about those we are serving in order to help create a sustainable and effective solution. I chose to volunteer with Global Brigades again this January because this student-led organization does exactly that. Global Brigades researches the countries and communities we travel to, in order to assess the community’s needs. As volunteers, we work completely in the service of the community and in the process learn about the rich, loving culture of the families we serve. Because of my experiences with Global Brigades, I have become a more knowledgeable and compassionate citizen of our world, and as I make my journey towards medical school, I hope to continue to participate in these experience that will help me to become a more knowledgeable, compassionate doctor as well.

Volunteer Activity Message

Volunteers on Medical and Dental Brigades work closely together with licensed medical and dental professionals to provide quality health initiatives to a community that otherwise has limited access to health care. Volunteers spend three days in a community in order to optimize the amount of time patients are able to spend with the physicians and dentists. Each patient receives a physician consultation, public health talk, and prescribed medicines as well as have access to PAP smears, prostate exams and restorative dental care as necessary. Children, in addition, receive teeth cleaning, a fluoride treatment, and vitamins necessary for proper growth and development. Volunteers have the opportunity to take patient vitals, obtain patient history and current symptoms, shadow and assist licensed physicians and dentists, participate in preventative education, and fill prescriptions under a licensed pharmacist. Volunteers will become familiar with the prevalent health issues in their community and learn about how to prevent and treat those illnesses. These brigades provide each volunteer with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on a specific community while gaining real life experience in the field of international medicine and dentistry.
