Miramonte Spring Break in Ecuador

Mackynzie's Message

I am so excited to go to Ecuador. Getting to help the citizens in Ecuador and help re-build a damaged forest is a once in a lifetime chance. I am looking forward to having the opportunity to speak in my native language, Spanish, in an everyday environment and making new friends.

Going on this trip will not only be beneficial to learning the culture and language, but also help with getting into college. As we all know college is getting harder and harder to get into. My goal for the future is to get my degree in Veterinary medicine and grow and develop my leadership skills. I also love the self-accomplishment of helping people in need. Not only will I get that from this trip, but we will also help the environment little by little. Everything makes a difference right?

Throughout my life I have traveled all over the world as far as Europe and Costa Rica. The places have differed to the extremes. Costa Rica was an un-developed country, where as Europe was highly developed. Going to Ecuador will expand my knowledge on how others live. Here in Orinda we live in a bubble. I believe that going outside this bubble and learning what the world is really like is an important step to becoming the person I hope to be in the future.

Now it’s your opportunity to make a difference, please donate. Feel free to give as much or as little as you want. Thank you so much for taking your time to read about my cause. Have a great day. :)

Volunteer Activity Description

TRAVEL.
Traveling with GSE involves everything from visiting a native bird sanctuary to hiking along Ecuador’s beautiful coastline. Students enjoy authentic Ecuadorian cuisine and collaborate on local projects with their international peers.

LEARN.
GSE uses hands-on service-learning projects and cultural exchanges to provide students with life changing learning opportunities. Students develop ecological literacy and participate in grassroots international relations while building crucial 21st century skills such as communication and collaboration.

IMPACT.
Each year during exchange programs, students plant 3,000 native trees in La Punta Gorda Preserve. Students also work along side their Ecuadorian peers at Fanny de Baird High School to further develop their school garden. The garden provides produce for the school community and offers an interactive education on local food systems and organic farming.

GROW.
Plants aren’t the only things that grow! International travel facilitates profound transformation for students. Students leave the trip with a better understanding of different cultures and people, inspiring them to become change makers and leaders in their own community.
