Passionate About:

In June, I will be traveling to communities of panama to treat them of waterborne illnesses and implement common first world amenities such as: toilets, sinks, water storage, eco-stoves, and cement floors.
As many of you already know I am a part of a non-profit organization called Global Brigades. Global Brigades is an international nonprofit organization that empowers under-resourced communities to meet their health and economic goals through university volunteers and local teams. Our mission is to empower volunteers and under-resourced communities to resolve global health and economic disparities. My chapter's current emphasis is to help the impoverished communities of Panama! A medical brigade consists of dedicated student volunteers, doctors, pharmacists, and nurses providing health care to these communities. The group functions like a mobile medical unit, setting up a small clinic to diagnose and treat patients at no cost. From in-take to triage, medical and dental consultations to prescription filling. The group experiences multiple facets of the medical profession under the guidance of licensed medical professionals. This brigade is also a public health brigade. Since we want to empower the community to become self-sustainable eventually, we build preventative measures such as flushable toilets and water storage to prevent Giardia, a waterborne illnesses. I have dedicated countless hours and become very familiar with volunteering here in my own city throughout the years, but I have always wanted to volunteer abroad. Thus, this will be my first brigade and I am eager to help people during our clinical days as well as build foundations of healthy, happy lifestyles for families during our time in Panama. I am excited to be working alongside fellow brigaders that are as passionate as I to create a better world. I would be deeply grateful for any donation in support of my passion towards helping others.

San Francisco State University Medical Brigade June 2017

Volunteer Activity Description

Global Brigades offers 7-9 day Medical Brigades throughout the year in Honduras, Panama and Nicaragua. During a Medical Brigade, volunteers have the opportunity to take vitals and patient history in triage, shadow licensed doctors in medical consultations, and assist in a pharmacy under the direction of licensed pharmacists. Each of our partner communities receives a brigade approximately twice a year. Between brigades, our in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and to conduct Community Health Worker (CHW) trainings to empower local leaders to sustain a consistent level of healthcare. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends.
