On the Global Health Internship we will with Medical, Dental and Community health workers to provide healthcare, initiate education, and conduct research to see the medical impact of the organization in community.

This is an incredible opportunity to learn and serve in the community of Accra, Ghana. These rural communities have less than 50% literacy and 39% of the population lives at the relative rural poverty line. While these people live happy and full lives they suffer from STDs, cholera, typhoid, pulmonary tuberculosis, anthrax, pertussis, tetanus, chicken pox, yellow fever, measles, infectious hepatitis, trachoma, malaria, schistosomiasis, dracunculiasis, dysentery, river blindness or onchocerciasis, several kinds of pneumonia, dehydration, venereal diseases, and poliomyelitis which can easily be treated and managed with healthcare clinics. These health problems can also be prevented by better sanitary conditions. Sanitary conditions in the community are improved by the public health team and the problem is looked at by the holistic model so that the organization is not just putting a "bandaid" on the health problems at hand. We also teach the community as we work so that the movement is sustainable. The approach that Global Brigades takes to improving the quality of life in developing nations is well-calculated and thought through. I cannot wait to learn and serve this summer for 4 weeks. I will be working all summer to fund the $3,000 needed for airfare and lodging.
