Passionate About:

I am a second year pre-med student at Loyola University Chicago majoring in International Studies and Neuroscience. I consider my glass half full and am a strong believer in perseverance. I am fascinated by new cultures and am always adding to my list of new experiences. This chance to serve on a medical brigade to Honduras is very exciting for me in that it will not only give me the unique clinical experience in a primitive medical environment but also allow me to directly make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate than myself.

Loyola Medical/Dental Brigade Aug 2012 Honduras

Nattie's Message

My name is Nattie, and I will be attending a Global Medical Brigade to Honduras this summer along with 30 other students, and 5 health care professionals. We will be spending time traveling to underserved areas in Honduras, setting up temporary clinics where people can come and receive medical treatment free of charge. During our brigade we will treat more than 1,500 impoverished villagers. Through in-take, triage, medical consultations, and filling prescriptions, we will experience many realms of medicine. For hours each day we will be administering medicines to local community members who are suffering from water-borne infectious diseases and dysentery caused by poor sanitation. Honduras is cited by the World Bank as the 3rd poorest country in the Western Hemisphere after Haiti and Nicaragua. The vast majority of people in Honduras live in rural communities without access to proper drinking water, sanitation, electricity, or access to proper roadways leading to civilization.

Please join me in supporting the critical medical care and work that I will be doing for the people and families in Honduras. Any support you can give will make a tremendous difference, be the donation large or small.

Volunteer Activity Description

Volunteers on the Medical and Dental Brigades will be working closely together to provide quality health initiatives to a community that otherwise has limited access to health care. Volunteers will spend three days in a community in order to optimize the amount of time patients are able to spend with the physicians and dentists. Each patient will receive a physician consultation, teeth cleaning and a fluoride treatment as well as have access to pap smears, prostate exams and restorative dental care as necessary. Volunteers will have the opportunity to take patient vitals, obtain patient history and current symptoms, shadow and assist licensed physicians and dentists, participate in preventative education, and fill prescriptions under a licensed pharmacist. Volunteers will become familiar with the prevalent health issues in their community and learn about how to prevent and treat those illnesses. These brigades provide each volunteer with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on a specific community while gaining real life experience in the field of international medicine and dentistry.
