Hello! I am Olivia Lopez, a first year student at NC State University studying Human Biology and interested in minoring in Global Health. I am also a Park Scholar of the class of '28 and this internship aligns with the Park Pillars—scholarship, leadership, service, and character—by offering growth in multiple areas. As a first year student who has never traveled outside of the US, the VAW Internship will help me explore global health, refine my major choice, and enhance my academic profile for future opportunities. My cultural competency and Spanish language skills will improve through real-world application, deepening my connection with my Mexican-American heritage and enhancing my character. The internship’s service aspect will allow me to directly impact communities in Guatemala, expanding my service experience beyond the U.S. and in health-related fields. Additionally, it will strengthen my leadership abilities, especially as I connect my service work with Engineers Without Borders. This opportunity will help clarify my academic and career path, guiding future course and internship choices, while offering a valuable introduction to international travel and global perspectives.
