Passionate About:

I am currently raising funds to attend a trip to Nicaragua with Spelman's Global Medical/Dental Brigade Program. The reason why I am participating in this program is because I love to commit my time to those in need and to gain clinical experience as I am working towards becoming a pediatrician. My desire to become a physician developed from the concern and sympathy for people in need of medical care, especially those with the least access. I am striving to bring better health care to undeserved populations. On this trip, I will be able to help provide adequate health care to those that have the little to no access. With your help, I will be able to attend this trip and make a small change in a community that needs it the most.

Spelman College Medical/Dental/Public Health Brigade March 2016 Nicaragua

Volunteer Activity Description

Global Brigades offers 7-10 day Medical Brigades throughout the year in Honduras, Panama, Nicaragua and Ghana. During a Medical Brigade, volunteers have the opportunity to take vitals and patient history in triage, shadow licensed doctors in medical consultations, and assist in a pharmacy under the direction of licensed pharmacists. Each of our partner communities receives a brigade approximately twice a year. Between brigades, our in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and to conduct Community Health Worker (CHW) trainings to empower local leaders to sustain a consistent level of healthcare. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends.

Global Brigades offers 7-10 day Public Health Brigades throughout the year in Honduras, Panama, Nicaragua and Ghana. On Public Health Brigades, volunteers develop sustainable health solutions and establish a standard of health quality by emphasizing prevention and education. The Public Health Program achieves this goal by implementing in-home infrastructure projects, providing health education, and engaging community members. Each Public Health Brigade will work with individual families, local schools, and community leaders with a focus on holistic and preventative health measures on both an individual and community-wide scale.
