SBU Medical Outreach trip to DR, August 2017

Stephanie's Message

This is a very important trip to me, therefore, any amount of donation would be greatly appreciated. Nothing is ever too small.
Thank you :)

I graduated with a B.S. in Biology, B.A in Psychology and Minor in Media Arts, from Stony Brook University. Currently working as a medical scribe allows me the opportunity to use my experiences to greater serve the community, as well as develop my career in the health field.
As a clinical/medical Intern at a private clinic. I prepare patient files for the physician, check in the patients and take their vitals. This ensure the clinic workflow. Overall, I diligently maintain and demonstrate an understanding of great patient care.
During my college years, I have gained valuable work experience in an array of fields. I have also been fortunate to volunteer as a patient advocate, where I served as a voice for patients, aiming to provide them with the best needed healthcare possible. My experience working at an adult day care service, monitoring Dementia and Alzheimer patients’ behaviors has instilled in me patience and the importance of paying attention to detail to assure their safety.
With this I will be embarking on a Medical Outreach trip to the DR this upcoming Summer. There, I will work in a mobile medical clinic, where I will intake patients, conduct public health surveys, take vitals, shadow local physicians, work in the pharmacy, teach education classes, and much more. I and my team will be opening mobile medical clinics for local communities during our time in the Dominican Republic. One of the most exciting and important parts of volunteering with VAW is bringing medication to the less fortunate. Fundraising for medications is a huge part of creating a successful mobile clinic to help the local communities with effective care.

Volunteer Activity Description

Join the SBU chapter as they lead a Medical Outreach trip to the DR this upcoming Summer! Volunteers will work in mobile medical clinics, where they will have the opportunity to intake patients, conduct public health surveys, take vitals, shadow local physicians, work in the pharmacy, teach education classes, and much more! If you’re interested in joining, contact us for more information!

VAW at SBU will be opening up mobile medical clinics for local communities during their time in the DR.

One of the most exciting and important parts of volunteering with VAW is bringing medication to the less fortunate. In 2016, VAW treated over 35,000 patients and we aspire to treat over 45,000 in 2017. One of the things that make our mobile clinics unique is that we not only triage and diagnose patients, but also provide them with the basic medications needed. Fundraising for medications is a huge part of creating a successful mobile clinic to help the local communities with effective care.

**Note: airfare goal will be updated once flights are purchased, tentatively the week of 15 May 2017
