California State University, Sacramento Medical Outreach trip to Dominican Republic 2016, Medication & Supply Fund

Stephen's Message

Hi! My name is Stephen Yun and I’m a recent graduate from California State University, Sacramento (CSUS). I received my bachelor’s of science in biology with a concentration in biomedical sciences. Currently I am preparing to apply to graduate school with the end goal of earning my masters of science degree in nursing and become a family nurse practitioner. Growing up, my family always emphasized the importance of giving back to others. In my pursuit of a master’s degree coupled with my passion for health, my goal is to continue this family value by being in a career that has endless opportunities to do so.
I am really excited to partner with my alma mater and Volunteers Around the World this August in helping to promote the importance of public health by assisting with service projects in rural communities in the Dominican Republic.

As a volunteer I will have the opportunity to further refine my leadership skills, advance my understanding of the health field, develop cross-cultural awareness, and promote and improve public health. Volunteers Around the World (VAW) is a non-governmental organization devoted to improving the standard of living for those that live in some of the most poverty stricken communities of the Dominican Republic. Our focus is to enhance community infrastructure through improved education, access to more advanced medical treatment, increased economic opportunities, and other community based initiatives.

Many rural communities in Dominican Republic lack what we in America consider basic utilities, such as drinkable water and electricity. At local elementary schools we will also do other fun activities to teach the kids about basic hygiene. While working in the Dominican Republic we will live with a host family near the rural communities we are serving. In order to serve the people of this country, I will need to raise $3,263 by June 23, 2016. The total cost included the program fee, airfare costs, and medical supply fund.

This trip would not be possible without your support! Please consider donating so that I will be able to join VAW and CSUS this summer in extending the education and access to public health to those who would otherwise not have access to it.

Fundraising Campaign Description

VAW at California State University, Sacramento will be opening up mobile medical clinics for local communities during their time in Dominican Republic.

One of the most exciting and important parts of volunteering with VAW is bringing medication to the less fortunate. In 2015, VAW treated over 30,000 patients and we aspire to treat over 50,000 in 2016. One of the things that make our mobile clinics unique is that we not only triage and diagnose patients, but also provide them with the basic medications needed. Fundraising for medications is a huge portion of creating a successful mobile clinic to help the local communities with effective care.
