University of California Santa Barbara Public Health/Water Brigades June 2016 Honduras

Viviana's Message

Hi! I'm Viviana, a 2nd year Psychology major at UC Santa Barbara and I work at the UCSB Student Health Center. My interests include going on hikes with the UCSB Excursion Club, walking along the beach, and any water activities such as swimming, kayaking, etc. I hope to work with children one day in either a classroom setting or clinical setting. As soon as I heard about Global Brigades I was interested in it. All of the different brigades empower communities in great ways, but Water Brigades caught my attention for several reasons. First, Water Brigades implements sustainable changes through infrastructure and education. We are going to make the effects of our brigade last longer than our actual brigade by building lasting water systems underground and in the small homes. Water is a unique issue when it comes to health because we need water to survive, but if it is not clean, then it could lead to just as much, if not more, illness than not having any water at all. Therefore, we also plan to educate them on how to utilize the resources they do have in a safe manner. The part of the brigade that I look most forward to though is interacting with the families and children. I hope to foster strong relationships and inspire the families in Honduras to endure the difficulties they face every day. This trip would enrich my college experience by exposing me to another culture/environment and by giving me a hands on opportunity. Thanks for your support!

Volunteer Activity Description

Global Brigades offers 7-day Water Brigades throughout the year in Honduras. Water Brigades' mission is to empower communities to access sufficient clean water through infrastructural development, water treatment, community leader training and education. Water Brigades volunteers assist in implementing clean water systems to prevent water-related illnesses in communities with limited access to clean water. One of the fundamental roadblocks to community development is lack of clean water. With a sufficient quantity of properly treated water, community members can cut off the connection between water and illness and ultimately live healthier, more productive lives. Volunteers work side-by-side with community members as well as with our in-country project technicians in all aspects of the water system's construction while learning about its design, functionality, and long-term sustainability.
