Brandeis Public Health Brigade January 2015 Honduras

Apoorva's Message

Hello Friends and Family,

My name is Apoorva Polavarapu, and I am currently in my second year at Brandeis University majoring in Biology and Health: Science, Society, and Policy and I am aspiring to pursue a career in the Dental field.

Last February I traveled to Honduras with a group of forty other Brandeis students on the Brandeis Medical Brigade with a goal to provide access to healthcare to rural Hondurans. We set out to establish up a clinic staffed by Honduran Healthcare Professionals including a Doctors, Dentists, a Gynecologist, and Pharmacist. We also had the opportunity to teach children in the community about hygiene practices. In just a few days of holding this medical clinic in El Higuerito, we were able to provide over 1000 Hondurans with a check up and proper medicines. However, we would have never had the tools or resources to make this dream a reality without Global Brigades.

Global Brigades is a nonprofit organization that allows college students to make positive and lasting social changes through a holistic approach in rural communities that may not have access to certain resources. The Brandeis Public Health, Medical, and Microfinance Brigades work share the common goal to improve the quality of life of many Hondurans who lack access to healthcare or a banking system. This gives us immeasurable hands-on experience working side-by-side with healthcare professionals. This year, I want to go on the Brandeis Public Health Brigade and I aim to broaden my scope of the healthcare system by participating in this empowering experience.

However, I will not be able to go on the Public Health Brigade to help these communities without YOUR help. This program has a price to it, and my dream to impact this community can come true with some help from you. Any form of generosity is greatly appreciated and puts me one step closer to Honduras. If you are not in the financial position to donate, please forward my page to any friends, family, co-workers, and/or neighbors to spread awareness of my cause.

I am extremely grateful for your time and generosity. Any form of aid is greatly appreciated and helps improve the lives of many Hondurans who do not have access to sanitation, healthcare, microfinance, and medicine. Please feel free to reach out to me for more information on other ways you can help.

Volunteer Activity Description

BU volunteers spend 7 days in Honduras, improving basic home infrastructure and providing health education to help reduce the incidences of life-threatening, but preventable, diseases in a rural community. With an understanding of the holistic model that focuses on education, community health sustainability and infrastructural development, volunteers first receive a comprehensive introduction to the country's public health challenges and the Public Health programs ground-up solution. They will take a tour of the community Public Health is currently working in, introduce themselves to the beneficiary families, and meet with the Basic Sanitation Committee (CSB). Then, working side-by-side with community members and local masons, volunteers construct four infrastructure projects meant to improve the health of the home and surrounding environment: eco-stoves, latrines, pilas (water storage units), and concrete floors. Additionally, as a key component of the program, Brown volunteers collaborate with the Basic Sanitation Committee and local teachers to help provide community-wide education workshops and training, proliferating sanitation and hygiene practices and empowering families with both the knowledge and tools to live healthier lives
