Cal Poly SLO Architecture Brigade June 2014

Carolyn's Message

Hello everybody!

I am currently a 1st year architecture student at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and this summer, I will be traveling to Honduras with volunteers from Cal Poly and other schools to help build a school/health center. I am very excited to be able to travel out of the country and help others.

The chance to travel to Honduras and help the community is an amazing opportunity for me. I will be traveling with volunteers who have the same passion and commitment to serving the world that I do. This is a great opportunity for me to become educated in the building process in an environment and situation that is very different from where I grew up.

The entire trip, which includes food, housing, materials, and airfare, will cost about $1500. Through the Global Architecture Brigade of Cal Poly SLO, our group is trying to fundraise as much as possible. Please consider donating to this cause to help me learn and grow through helping the people of Honduras.

Thank you! If you have any questions, please e-mail me at cpires@calpoly.edu

Volunteer Activity Description

Architecture Brigades volunteers from Cal Poly SLO will spend 7 days doing construction on large projects, such as schools and health centers, that will provide health and education infrastructure to benefit entire communities in rural Honduras.

On the brigade, students will learn about the necessity of the project, the justifications for the structures design, and a variety of local construction techniques. Depending on what point during the construction process they make their brigade, students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of construction processes, from foundation work to wood framing to detailing, and everything in between.

Volunteers do not need prior building expertise for the brigade, as they will be working alongside skilled masons who will guide students on proper building practices and safety precautions during building, while also educating volunteers of the use of local materials.

In addition to the construction aspects of the brigade, volunteers will be given the chance to create and host an interactive education lesson for members of the local community. The ages and demographics of the audience may vary, and the education topics cover basic concepts of architecture and design.

Combining the efforts of both the construction and educational aspects of the brigade, by the end of the week, volunteers on the Cal Poly SLO Architecture Brigade will be able to see the impact have made in the community!
