Albany Medical Outreach trip to DR, June 2018

Emily's Message

Everyone believes they have a moral obligation to give back to the world by either giving to charities or by physically impacting the world.

My name is Emily Brizzee I am a freshmen at University at Albany studying biology with a minor in neuroscience. My long term goal is to become a physicians assistant. I have always want to help those in need and the medical field is the path I need to take. My short term goals are to be able to gain as much experience as I can to help become the physicians assistant in the near future.

I am in an organization called Volunteers Around the World, the group and I will be traveling to the Dominican Republic from June 8th to June 22nd. For those fifteen days we will all have seven hour shifts giving medical assistance or education for adults and children. Our goal is to help as many families as we can. The majority of the people we visit at schools and churches live below the poverty line and are very sick. Over the years each year the organization has been able to give assistance to over 700 families. Each of us have to fundraise $2,000 which includes meals, housing, and transportation. This also includes the medication and educational supplies.

This trip is not a vacation to us this trip is for us to be able to grow as people and students through these experiences. The least I hope this page will achieve is to make people aware that people are making a difference in the world and you can help too.

Winstone Churchill once said "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give."

Volunteer Activity Description

Join the Albany chapter as they lead a Medical Outreach trip to DR this upcoming Summer! Volunteers will work in mobile medical clinics, where they will have the opportunity to intake patients, conduct public health surveys, take vitals, shadow local physicians, work in the pharmacy, teach education classes, and much more! If you’re interested in joining, contact us for more information!

VAW at Albany will be opening up mobile medical clinics for local communities during their time in DR.

One of the most exciting and important parts of volunteering with VAW is bringing medication to the less fortunate. In 2017, VAW treated over 35,000 patients and we aspire to treat over 45,000 in 2018. One of the things that make our mobile clinics unique is that we not only triage and diagnose patients, but also provide them with the basic medications needed. Fundraising for medications is a huge part of creating a successful mobile clinic to help the local communities with effective care.

**Note: airfare goal will be updated once flights are purchased, tentatively the week of January 28-feb 3rd
