University of Pittsburgh Public Health Brigade May 2017 Honduras

Emmy's Message

This May I will be traveling to Honduras with the University of Pittsburgh chapter of Global Public Health Brigades. We will be working to implement sustainable water in-home infrastructure and to educate local families in rurally developing communities about sanitation practices which will improve the quality of life for people in Honduras and their families.

This is a cause I feel very passionately about, as clean water is one advantage we hold by living in a first world country that is often taken advantage of. Access to clean water is a fundamental human right and I want to work to transform the lives of Honduran peoples by working alongside them to build sustainable solutions to this issue in rural communities. Approximately 63 percent of the population in Honduras lives below the poverty line, making it the second poorest country in Central America. More than 1.4 million Hondurans lack access to improved sanitation and 800,000 are without a safe water source. The projects that myself and fellow Pitt Brigaders will be working on this May will make huge strides in the global initiative for all people to be afforded their rightful access to clean water, which will eliminate many of the diseases that plague rurally developing communities and enhance the quality of education in these areas.

All donations, large or small, are greatly appreciated!

Volunteer Activity Description

Global Brigades offers 7-9 day Public Health Brigades throughout the year in Honduras, Panama and Nicaragua. On Public Health Brigades, volunteers develop sustainable health solutions and establish a standard of health quality by emphasizing prevention and education. The Public Health Program achieves this goal by implementing in-home infrastructure projects, providing health education, and engaging community members. Each Public Health Brigade will work with individual families, local schools, and community leaders with a focus on holistic and preventative health measures on both an individual and community-wide scale.
