UCLA Human Rights Brigade June 2014 Panama

Rimon's Message

My name is Rimon Elkotbeid and I am currently part of Global Human Rights Brigades at UCLA. We are a student-led, non-profit organization that is preparing to send a group of student volunteers to Panama in June 2014. In Panama, we will be working with remote communities that are under resourced and largely unaware of their legal rights. We will be leading legal education workshops tailored to these community on various topics such as: government institutions, family law, property rights, business rights, etc. The brigade will provide my peers and me with the unique opportunity to work closely with Panamanian lawyers and to gain an unforgettable experience providing pro-bono legal consulting to rural communities and empowering them with rights and government benefits that they would not have received otherwise. I am writing to you with the hopes that you will be able to contribute to our goal of raising $2,500 to cover our expenses (airfare and in-country costs) for the 7-day long brigade. Although this sum seems daunting, it is an achievable goal if we are able to get as much help as possible.

Any contribution is greatly appreciated!

Volunteer Activity Description

Human Rights Brigades volunteers work with Panamanian lawyers to provide pro-bono legal consulting through a 7 day brigade in Panama. Human Rights Brigades provides services to remote communities, on a family by family basis. By focusing on the families of one community at a time, volunteers can not only shadow and assist lawyers as they provide legal consulting to community members, but also take an active role in providing legal assistance on a personalized scale. Human Rights Brigades primarily works with remote communities that are under resourced and largely unaware of their legal rights.Volunteers lead legal education workshops tailored to the community on various topics such as: the land titling process, government institutions, family law, property rights, business rights, conflict resolution, etc. Student are able to put their legal research to practice and shadow lawyers in developing solutions to various legal problems. The brigade experience is a life changing experience for both the community members and our student volunteers!
