Welcome family and friends to my Empowered page! This May, I will be volunteering in Honduras to provide proper oral care to the rural communities. I will be working side by side with the dentist and some of my duties include writing down medical records, sterilizing the equipment, assisting, and educating the community about proper oral health. In the Honduran community I will be volunteering at, majority of the families lack the resources to maintain proper oral health. One of the reasons is because the closest dentist is about 50 miles away. Therefore, one of my goals is to educate the community about the proper techniques to maintain quality oral health. My fellow volunteers and I will practice with the children on how to brush and floss and discuss with their parents about the importance of an adequate diet to their oral health.
The stories I’ve heard from past trips have told me this will be an eye-opening experience about the need of dental care on a global scale. I hope to look back one day and be proud of myself because I left an impact on that community. Another goal of mine is to figure out what kind of impact the community will have on me. At first, we will be complete strangers but by the end of the trip I hope to have made new relationships. As I pursue a career into dentistry, I hope to gain from this experience is an open-minded perspective of the type of impact I would like to have in the world.
