Movement Exchange at UD: Panama 2017

Olivia's Message

From the age of seven Olivia began studying dance at Fusion Dance Centre, a local dance studio in New Jersey. For eleven years she competed with their company, performing Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Lyrical, Modern, and Contemporary dance styles, winning both Regional and National awards. After departing from the studio and beginning her college career at the University of Delaware she joined the dance minor program to further her study of dance while majoring in art.

"Even though I was a dance minor, and danced my entire life, I still felt I didn't do everything I wanted to with dance. I got tired of just going to class and performing for myself, I wanted to do something more with it.", Olivia explains as she talks about what inspired her to start Movement Exchange at the University of Delaware. "When I was doing service in Costa Rica, during recess I taught the kids ballet on my own, they were really into it. It was amazing to me that they barely knew English, and I barely knew Spanish, but still we were able to communicate through dance. It was like a language in itself." After teaching kids in Costa Rica Olivia researched ways she could try to continue that in college, which is how she came across Movement Exchange. After an application process with the national organization and flying out to Indiana University to meet the Movement Exchange team, she was approved to start her own chapter.

"I was so excited to begin, but also really scared. I didn't want people to think it was just another performance club on campus, I want people to know that we are different. Our goal isn't to win awards and prove we are the best, our goal is help children experience our love for dance, and use it as a tool to help them through difficult times. To be able to travel to Panama this summer would be a dream come true, and make everything I've worked for even more worth it." You can help Olivia travel to Panama to teach dance by donating today, as well as donate to the national organization, Movement Exchange.
