Brandeis Public Health Brigade January 2015 Honduras

Matthew's Message

Dear Friends, Family, Co-Workers, and Loved Ones,

My name is Matthew Schwartz, and I am a current Junior at Brandeis University studying Health: Science, Society, and Policy, and Biology. After Brandeis I aspire pursue a career in Medicine where I can provide healthcare to people who do not have access to it.

Last February I traveled to Honduras with a group of forty other Brandeis students with the one goal of improving the quality of life of many rural Hondurans. We set out to establish up a week-long clinic staffed by American Healthcare Professionals, help construct a wide-variety of public health projects in the homes of many Hondurans, and teach entire villages about Public Health and sanitation practices. However, we would have never had the tools or resources to make this dream a reality without Global Brigades.

Global Brigades is a nonprofit organization that enables college students to create positive social changes in diverse communities and make an impact on many lives. The Brandeis Public Health, Medical, and Microfinance Brigades strives to improve the quality of life and health of many rural Hondurans, who would otherwise not have access to any form of healthcare or rural banking. This allows us to work side-by-side with doctors and other healthcare professionals to improve the quality of health, sanitation, and public health of a community in a sustainable manner. Global Brigades’ mission is to empower the people who we are assisting to lead better quality lives. I seek to broaden my own perspective on global health, and enrich my experience at Brandeis by helping those who need it most.

However, I will not have the ability to return to Honduras to help empower these communities without YOUR help. As you can see, this program has a price tag on it, and there are a few things you can do to make my dream of making an impact in this community a reality. Any form of generosity is greatly appreciated and puts me one step closer to Honduras. If you are not in the financial position to donate, please forward my page to any friends, family, co-workers, and/or neighbors to spread awareness of my cause.

I would like to express my gratitude to your time and generosity. Any form of aid is greatly appreciated and helps improve the lives of many Hondurans who do not have access to sanitation, healthcare, microfinance, and medicine. Please feel free to reach out to me for more information on other ways you can help.

Volunteer Activity Description

BU volunteers spend 7 days in Honduras, improving basic home infrastructure and providing health education to help reduce the incidences of life-threatening, but preventable, diseases in a rural community. With an understanding of the holistic model that focuses on education, community health sustainability and infrastructural development, volunteers first receive a comprehensive introduction to the country's public health challenges and the Public Health programs ground-up solution. They will take a tour of the community Public Health is currently working in, introduce themselves to the beneficiary families, and meet with the Basic Sanitation Committee (CSB). Then, working side-by-side with community members and local masons, volunteers construct four infrastructure projects meant to improve the health of the home and surrounding environment: eco-stoves, latrines, pilas (water storage units), and concrete floors. Additionally, as a key component of the program, Brown volunteers collaborate with the Basic Sanitation Committee and local teachers to help provide community-wide education workshops and training, proliferating sanitation and hygiene practices and empowering families with both the knowledge and tools to live healthier lives
