Fundraising Campaign Message

The Badjao are the poorest ethnic group in the Philippines and traditionally known as sea nomads who live in boats and stilt houses along the shoreline. Their history is vague and full of myth, which makes them misunderstood to this day. They are one of the gentlest tribes in Southeast Asia. Most members of the tribe are illiterate and lack proper documentation of their births and this makes them an easy target for marginalization.

On April 4, 2014 a fire swept through the Badjao village at Isla Verde located in Davao City and destroyed everything in its path including the learning center. After the fire the children and their families were living in a refugee camp at the nearby Sta.Ana Wharf. After three months of enduring extreme conditions and illness which unfortunately resulted in several deaths, the Badjao have since been able to start the rebuilding process thanks to the kindness and generosity of people both here in the Philippines and abroad. Today the Badjao have started the process of rebuilding their homes along the beach at Isla Verde.

We are just now entering into the stormy season, therefore we are in immediate need of funds to complete these homes and this is where You come in.

The Badjao live in stilt houses that are constructed mainly of coconut lumber and bamboo. Fortunately the cost to build these types of houses is quite inexpensive. Depending on the size of the family a house can be built for between 8-15,000 pesos. ($185-$340) As of today, all of the families have built the foundations in which their homes will be built on and many have already framed out the walls and trusses for their roofs. On average, each home is in need of around 6,500 pesos ($150) in order to be complete. Some a little more, some a little less.

The total cost finish this project will be around 273,000 pesos ($6,500).

While the amount needed sounds like a lot, always remember that many hands make for light work. For further details on the campaign or on how you can help, please contact me.
