UCLA Human Rights Brigade June 2014 Panama

Zurit's Message

I am currently a third year at the University of California- Los Angeles, majoring in Psychology and pursuing a Spanish minor. I aspire to become an attorney in family or immigration law further in my career. Therefore, going on this trip is very important to me because it will allow me the opportunity to closely see current legal cases. Most importantly, this brigade will allow me to give back to under resourced communities. Given that I come from a working class family, I can relate to the consequences and misfortunate of not having access to legal advice, and I understand the impact a helping hand can make. I will be working alongside in-country lawyers, assisting in various tasks, including translating from Spanish to English, as well as leading educational law workshops. This trip touches upon serving the community, my interest in law, and my love for the Spanish language.
Any contribution is extremely appreciated as it takes me one step closer to fulfilling one of my goals.
If you would like to know more about this amazing program feel free to email me at zuritbarajas1@ucla.edu.
Best, Zurit Barajas

Volunteer Activity Description

Human Rights Brigades volunteers work with Panamanian lawyers to provide pro-bono legal consulting through a 7 day brigade in Panama. Human Rights Brigades provides services to remote communities, on a family by family basis. By focusing on the families of one community at a time, volunteers can not only shadow and assist lawyers as they provide legal consulting to community members, but also take an active role in providing legal assistance on a personalized scale. Human Rights Brigades primarily works with remote communities that are under resourced and largely unaware of their legal rights.Volunteers lead legal education workshops tailored to the community on various topics such as: the land titling process, government institutions, family law, property rights, business rights, conflict resolution, etc. Student are able to put their legal research to practice and shadow lawyers in developing solutions to various legal problems. The brigade experience is a life changing experience for both the community members and our student volunteers!
