Volunteer Activity Description

Start Date: Jun 23, 2019 12:00 AM
End Date: Jun 29, 2019 12:00 AM

Global Brigades is based on a holistic model that implements 7 types of student led brigades in order to ultimately achieve sustainability. Global Brigades of SEMO will be participating in a 7 day Medical Brigade in Honduras! During a Medical Brigade, volunteers spend a few days in a clinic and have the opportunity to take vitals & patient history, shadow doctors in medical consultations/ treatment, assist with dental extractions (sometimes fillings), optical exams, educate children, assist in a pharmacy, and perform daily data entry to keep track of the impact brigades are making. Each clinical station is overseen by a licensed professional and volunteers will be trained hands on. In addition to the clinic days, we spend a couple days constructing public health projects such as ecostoves, latrines, and cement floors to prevent diseases from reoccurring in communities after treatment in our clinics. Communities receives a brigade approximately twice a year until they are sustainable on their own. Between brigades, Global Brigades in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and to conduct Community Health Worker (CHW) trainings which empower local leaders to sustain a consistent level of healthcare. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends.
