Background

Jairo lives in a community called Los Huatales in the South of the country, one of the departments in Honduras with the highest percentage of poverty. His house is very peculiar: it is only made up of tree sticks, nylon and the ceiling. The place where they live consists of only one big room; instead of beds they sleep in hammocks; in the same room you can find the kitchen, living room, and storage of their clothes and supplies. Jairo lives with his mom, dad and 7 siblings; with different age ranges from 3 yrs – 15 yrs. His dad is the only person that works. He goes fishing only during fishing season and his mom sells the fish at home. They earn approximately $20 per week, but if he doesn’t fish they don’t have any income.

Next Steps
Jairo was found during a public health brigade and referred directly to the referral program. He has a mass in his right leg, which is approximately 6 cm long. It is not painful, but it is firm and immobile. He has had the mass for about a year. The mass doesn’t cause any pain when walking or doing any other activity, but its composition needs to be analyzed further. His parents told us that he had the same mass on the same leg 4 years ago and had it surgically removed. However, they don’t remember the diagnostic back then and lost all previous information.

Call to Action
Getting a medical diagnostic/pathology of the mass is the most important. By having a biopsy of the mass we can better determine the course of action with his pathology. A biopsy costs approximately $50. That would be the first step, and the final step would be defining what type of surgery he will need. We encourage you to start donating for Jairo’s recovery. We would also like to improve his family's living conditions.
